Cullinan, Gauteng · thirty minutes from Menlyn
Retreats near Pretoria East: thirty minutes from Menlyn, a world away
From Menlyn, Faerie Glen or Silver Lakes the farm is a half hour drive. That proximity changes what a retreat can be: not a trip you plan for months, but a deliberate pause you can take on a Saturday. Therapeutic retreats near Cullinan, guided in English or German.

The closest therapeutic retreat to Pretoria East
Of all the areas in Gauteng, Pretoria East sits nearest to the farm. From Menlyn the drive is roughly thirty minutes, and from suburbs such as Faerie Glen, Garsfontein, Lynnwood, Willow Acres and Silver Lakes it is barely longer. Solomon Mahlangu Drive and Hans Strijdom Drive both feed east towards the Cullinan road, so the route avoids most of the city entirely.

Short travel time removes the biggest practical obstacle to rest. You do not need to take leave, arrange flights or explain a week-long absence. A day retreat becomes something you can genuinely do between one weekend and the next, and a weekend retreat costs you almost no travel at all.
It also makes the follow-up easy. I hold face to face appointments in Menlyn Maine by arrangement, which means that whatever begins on the farm can be continued a few kilometres from home.

Why proximity does not make it a day out
A common assumption is that something thirty minutes away cannot really feel like getting away. In practice the opposite happens. The Cullinan road leaves the suburbs behind within a few kilometres, and the farm sits in open bushveld with no through traffic. The change in sound alone is striking: birds instead of the constant background hum that most Pretoria East residents stop noticing until it is gone.
What creates the distance is not the number of kilometres but the structure of the day. Phones go quiet, meals are prepared for you, and the schedule is held by someone else. That combination is what allows a nervous system to stand down, and it works whether you have driven thirty minutes or three hundred.
Guests frequently tell me they felt the shift by the first evening. The proximity means you can arrive without the fatigue of travel, which in turn means the first day is already useful rather than spent recovering from the journey.
Ask me about the next available weekend and see how little it takes to genuinely step out.

Retreat formats and how long to stay
A full day on the farm with reflective work, mindfulness, time in nature and a shared meal. For Pretoria East residents this is the most accessible entry point, since you leave after breakfast and are home by evening.
Two to three days, the format most guests find genuinely restorative. Long enough for the body to settle, short enough to arrange around family commitments.
Up to a week, or an intensive individually designed ten day programme, for people working through a significant life change rather than simply needing a break.
Planned entirely around you, as an individual, a couple, a family or a small group of friends who want to do this together.
Tell me how much time you can realistically take and I will suggest the right format.
The retreat types on offer
The theme shapes the work more than the length does. These are the formats currently offered:
For exhaustion, prolonged stress and emotional processing.
When stress has settled into the body.
For partners who want to reconnect rather than simply take a holiday together.
Using creativity as a therapeutic tool, with no artistic experience needed.
For those who need the noise to stop before anything else can happen.
Combining movement, breath and stillness.
For families under strain or in transition.
Shorter seasonal formats.
Not sure which one fits? A short questionnaire narrows it down before we even speak.
Cullinan as a setting
Cullinan itself is best known for the mine that produced the largest gem diamond ever found, and the village has kept its early twentieth century character. The farm sits outside the town in open country, close enough that guests occasionally combine a retreat with a short visit to the village, far enough that nothing of the town reaches the property.
The surrounding area is quiet farmland and bushveld, with Roodeplaat Dam and the Dinokeng reserve within reach for anyone who wants to extend the stay. Most guests do not. The point of the farm is that you do not need to go anywhere once you arrive.
There are walking routes on and around the property, a hot tub, shaded outdoor space and meals prepared by our chef. The bird life is genuinely exceptional, and the night skies are the kind that people from Pretoria East forget still exist half an hour from home.

What the therapeutic work involves
Every retreat combines rest with structured reflection. Depending on the format that means guided conversation, journaling, mindfulness practice, movement, expressive exercises or silence. The therapeutic frame comes from systemic therapy, which looks at how you interact with the people and structures around you rather than treating you as an isolated problem to be solved.
In practice that means we work with your strengths and resources as much as with what is difficult. The aim is that you leave able to name what has been happening and with a small number of practical tools that survive contact with an ordinary Monday.
An important boundary: my retreats are therapeutically grounded but they are not psychotherapy and not medical treatment. For acute concerns the SADAG helpline is free on 0800 567 567. If you are uncertain whether a retreat suits your current situation, tell me before booking and we will assess it honestly.
Describe your situation in a short message and I will tell you frankly whether a retreat is the right step.
Sessions in Menlyn Maine before and after
For guests from Pretoria East the farm and the consulting room sit within the same half hour radius. I see clients face to face in Menlyn Maine by appointment, and also in Sandton or entirely online, whichever suits your week.
Some people begin with a few counselling sessions and decide during that process that a retreat would deepen the work. Others come to the farm first and then book an integration session two or three weeks later. Both routes are equally valid and neither is a package you are pushed towards.
German speaking guests can have the whole process in German, from the first conversation through the retreat to any ongoing sessions. In South Africa that combination is rare, and for many people it makes a real difference to be able to work in their first language.
Book an appointment in Menlyn Maine or a virtual session and we will start wherever makes sense for you.
About Juliane
I am a therapist, systemic coach and couples counsellor, registered as a counsellor in independent practice in South Africa, with a Master of Science in psychology and a master’s degree in management. Before turning to therapeutic work I was a consultant and led teams in several companies, an experience that still shapes how I work with people carrying professional pressure.
I host all retreats personally and collaborate with co-facilitators for specific formats. What I try to create is a warm, patient and safe environment in which self-reflection is possible without anyone having to perform.
You can reach me on +27 67 161 4603, also on WhatsApp, or by email at juliane@reflectwithjuliane.com. The introductory call lasts fifteen minutes, is free and commits you to nothing.

Frequently asked questions about retreats near Pretoria East
How far is the farm from Menlyn?
About thirty minutes by car. From Faerie Glen, Garsfontein, Lynnwood, Willow Acres and Silver Lakes the drive is comparable, since the route runs east out of the suburbs rather than through the city.
Is a day retreat worthwhile if I live so close?
Yes, and the proximity is an advantage. You arrive without travel fatigue, so the day is useful from the start rather than spent recovering from a journey.
What happens on a typical retreat day?
Mornings usually begin with gentle movement or meditation, the middle of the day holds the reflective and therapeutic work, and afternoons are deliberately open for walking, resting or the hot tub. Meals are prepared by our chef and eaten together.
Do I need to bring anything special?
Comfortable clothes and a willingness to slow down. No prior experience of yoga, meditation or therapy is required, and no particular level of fitness. Everything else is covered in the introductory call.
Can I bring my family?
Yes. Family retreats are one of the available formats and are designed for families under strain or moving through a period of change. They can also be arranged as a fully customised programme.
What does a retreat cost?
It depends on the format, the duration and the group size. Let me know which retreat interests you and you will receive a clear quotation without hidden costs.
Can I come alone as a woman?
Yes, and many guests do. You can join a small group retreat or book an individual retreat. The farm is a private property and the setting is safe and supervised throughout.
Are the retreats offered in German?
Yes. I work in both German and English, and German speaking guests can have the entire experience in German, including planning and follow-up.
Is this a substitute for therapy?
No. The retreats are therapeutically grounded but do not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment. For urgent concerns the free SADAG helpline is available on 0800 567 567.
Can I continue with sessions afterwards in Pretoria?
Yes. I hold face to face appointments in Menlyn Maine by arrangement, as well as in Sandton or online. Many guests book a single integration session a few weeks after the retreat.
