Cullinan, Gauteng · an hour from Bryanston
Retreats near Bryanston: space at home, stillness on the farm
Bryanston has gardens, quiet streets and room to breathe, and still most households here run at full capacity from Monday to Sunday. My therapeutic retreats on a farm near Cullinan, around an hour away, offer something a large garden cannot: a structure in which nobody needs anything from you.

Why space at home is not the same as rest
Bryanston, Sandown, Morningside and the surrounding suburbs are among the most comfortable places to live in Gauteng. There is greenery, there are trees older than the suburbs themselves, and there is physical room. What there is rarely is a moment in which nothing is being asked of you.
The pattern I see in guests from this area is not deprivation but saturation. School runs, sport on Saturdays, extended family, a demanding job or a business, a household to run and the constant low-level management that holds it all together. The garden is beautiful and it is also where the dog needs walking, the pool needs attention and the phone still works.
Rest requires more than an absence of noise. It requires an absence of responsibility, and that is precisely what is hardest to arrange in your own home. A retreat solves the problem structurally: for a day or a weekend, the schedule belongs to someone else.

The route from Bryanston to the farm
The farm sits near Cullinan in eastern Gauteng, about an hour from Bryanston. The usual route runs onto the N1 north towards Pretoria, then east on the N4 towards Witbank, before the R513 turnoff towards Cullinan. The last stretch runs past smallholdings and open bushveld.
Drive time

Best departure
Before fifteen hundred or after nineteen hundred, to miss the northbound peak.
An hour is a manageable Friday afternoon or Saturday morning drive, and it is short enough that a single day retreat remains realistic. Guests who want to avoid the northbound peak usually leave either before fifteen hundred or after nineteen hundred.
Directions and arrival times are confirmed once dates are set, together with everything else you might want to know before you leave the house.
Let me know which weekend you are considering and I will send the details.
Retreats for couples who have stopped talking about anything but logistics
The most common request I receive from this part of Johannesburg is not for individual work but for couples retreats. The description is usually similar: the household functions, the children are fine, the diary is coordinated, and somewhere in that efficiency the two people have stopped meeting each other.
Couples retreats are built around three movements.
Acknowledging and reconnecting
Rediscovering each other’s presence rather than each other’s tasks.
Empathy and understanding
Learning to see the other’s perspective and their individual difficulties.
Committing to growth
Concrete habits that survive the return home.
I work from family and systemic therapy alongside emotion-focused approaches, and every couples retreat is adapted to the specific pair rather than delivered from a template. Weekend formats and fully customised programmes are both possible.
If this describes your relationship more than you would like, get in touch and we will look at the options.
Formats for individuals, couples and families
One full day on the farm, the simplest option to arrange around family commitments.
Two to three days, the format where the shift usually becomes noticeable.
Up to a week, for prolonged exhaustion or a period of real change.
An intensive programme designed individually.
For the household as a whole, particularly after a difficult year.
Shaped around you, your partner or a small group of friends.
Tell me who would be coming and how long you have, and I will suggest the right shape.
What the days on the farm involve
The rhythm is gentle and deliberate. Mornings often start with movement or a short meditation while it is cool. Reflective and therapeutic work sits in the middle of the day. Afternoons are left open, and the open afternoon is not a gap in the programme but part of it.
Meals come from our chef and are eaten together. There is a hot tub, there are walking routes on and around the property, and there is shade to sit in. Guests speak most often about two things afterwards: the birds and the night sky, both of which are unrecognisable compared to a Bryanston garden.
Bring comfortable clothes and a willingness to slow down. Nothing on the programme requires prior experience of yoga, meditation or therapy, and nothing depends on fitness. Everything practical is settled in the introductory call.
Book a call and we will walk through exactly what your days would look like.
Therapeutically grounded, not a wellness package
There are many places within an hour of Bryanston that will give you a massage and a view. What distinguishes this is that the rest is combined with structured therapeutic work, so that you understand what has been draining you and not only that you were tired.
My approach comes from systemic therapy, which looks at how you interact with your environment and the people in your life, and which works with your strengths and resources rather than cataloguing what is wrong. In a full household that lens is usually the more useful one, because the pattern normally sits in the arrangement rather than in any one person.
A necessary boundary: the retreats are therapeutically grounded but they do not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment. For acute concerns the SADAG helpline is free on 0800 567 567. If you are unsure whether a retreat is appropriate, tell me before booking and we will assess it honestly.
Ask me whether a retreat fits your situation and you will get a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
Continuing in Sandton after the retreat
Sandton is minutes from Bryanston, and I hold face to face appointments there by arrangement. Menlyn Maine in Pretoria is the alternative, and virtual sessions are available for anyone whose week is unpredictable.
Couples often book two or three sessions in the weeks after a retreat to keep the agreements alive once ordinary life resumes. Individuals sometimes do the same, or move into regular counselling or coaching. Neither is expected, and no continuation is proposed to you while you are still on the farm.
German speaking guests can work in German throughout, including planning, the retreat itself and follow-up. In South Africa this combination is unusual, and for many people it is the reason they get in touch in the first place.
Book a session in Sandton or online and we will consolidate what the retreat opened up.
About Juliane
I am a therapist, systemic coach and couples counsellor, registered as a counsellor in independent practice in South Africa. I hold a Master of Science in psychology and a master’s degree in management, and my earlier career was in consulting, where I led teams in several companies.
I host all retreats personally and work with co-facilitators for specific formats such as yoga, expressive art and body reset. What I aim to create is warmth, patience and safety, so that reflection is possible without anyone having to hold themselves together.
Reach me on +27 67 161 4603, also on WhatsApp, or at juliane@reflectwithjuliane.com. The introductory call lasts fifteen minutes, is free and commits you to nothing.
Get in touch and we will plan your retreat, on your own, as a couple or as a family.
Frequently asked questions about retreats near Bryanston
How far is the farm from Bryanston?
Roughly an hour by car, via the N1 north and the N4 east towards the Cullinan turnoff. The final stretch runs through open country away from the highway.
Can we come as a couple for a weekend?
Yes. Couples retreats over a weekend are one of the most frequently booked formats, structured around reconnecting, understanding each other and agreeing habits that hold once you are home.
Are family retreats really for the whole family?
Yes. Family retreats are designed for the household as a system rather than treating one member as the difficulty, and they suit families moving through tension or a period of change.
What if only one of us wants to come?
That is common and entirely workable. An individual retreat focuses on you, and couples work can follow later if both of you decide it would help.
Do I need experience with meditation or yoga?
No. Everything is guided so that beginners can take part fully. There is no fitness requirement and no spiritual background is assumed.
What does a retreat cost?
The cost depends on the format, the duration and the number of participants. Send me a note about what interests you and you will receive a transparent quotation.
What is included in the stay?
Guided sessions, meals prepared by our chef, walking routes, outdoor space and the hot tub, plus accommodation for overnight formats. Exact inclusions are confirmed in your quotation.
Are the retreats available in German?
Yes. I work in German and English, and German speaking guests can have the entire process in German from the first call onwards.
Is a retreat a replacement for couples therapy?
No. A couples retreat is therapeutically grounded and can achieve a great deal in a short time, but it does not replace ongoing psychotherapy or medical treatment. For acute concerns, SADAG is free on 0800 567 567.
Can we book sessions afterwards nearby?
Yes. I see clients face to face in Sandton by appointment, a short drive from Bryanston, as well as in Menlyn Maine in Pretoria or online.
