Cullinan, Gauteng · an hour from Rosebank
Retreats near Rosebank and Illovo: for people who live without a garden
Apartment living in Rosebank or Illovo has real advantages. Silence is not one of them. My therapeutic retreats take place on a farm near Cullinan, about an hour away, where the loudest thing at night is the bird life and the schedule is not yours to manage.

Density has a cost that is easy to overlook
Rosebank and Illovo are among the few genuinely walkable parts of Johannesburg. Offices, restaurants, the Gautrain station and the shops are all within a few blocks, and for a lot of people that convenience is exactly why they moved here. The trade-off is that home is an apartment, the outdoor space is a balcony, and the city never quite stops being audible.
For someone in a townhouse in a quieter suburb, an afternoon in the garden is a plausible form of recovery. In an apartment on Oxford Road it is not available. What replaces it is usually a screen, and a screen is the opposite of what an overstimulated nervous system needs.
The people I see from this area are often mid-career professionals in the surrounding offices and creative businesses, or younger people building something. They are rarely in crisis. They are usually just permanently switched on, with nowhere at home that suggests otherwise.
Book a free fifteen minute call and we will talk about what genuine quiet would require.

Getting to the farm from Rosebank and Illovo
The farm lies near Cullinan in eastern Gauteng, roughly an hour from Rosebank. The route runs north on the M1 and then the N1 towards Pretoria, east on the N4 towards Witbank, and finally onto the R513 towards Cullinan.
Drive time
About an hour from Rosebank. Illovo adds only a few minutes.

Without a car
A lift or a car service, and guests often share the drive.
For guests without a car the practical route is a lift or a car service, and several people share the drive with someone else attending the same retreat. If that would help, let me know when you book and I can flag it, since group retreats often draw people from the same part of the city.
An hour is short enough that a day retreat is entirely realistic. Weekend guests generally leave in the early afternoon on Friday to stay ahead of the northbound peak.
Tell me your dates and I will confirm the route, timings and arrival details.
Formats, from one day to ten
One full day, the easiest way to test whether this suits you before committing further.
Each format is described in more detail on the retreat overview page, and a short questionnaire helps identify which one matches what you are currently looking for.
Let me know how much time you can take and I will suggest the format that fits.
The retreat themes and who they suit
For prolonged stress, exhaustion and the state of still performing while no longer recovering. This is the usual entry point for people working in and around the Rosebank and Illovo offices.
For when stress has become physical: tension held in the shoulders and jaw, disrupted sleep, digestive complaints. Movement, nutrition and reflection are combined rather than addressed separately.
Silent and expressive art retreats
Two opposite responses to the same problem. Silence when the constant input is itself the obstacle, and creative expression when talking has reached its limit and something needs to come out another way.
Couples and yoga and meditation retreats
Couples retreats work through reconnecting, understanding each other and agreeing practical habits. Yoga and meditation retreats offer a gentler route in through breath, movement and stillness, with no experience assumed.
Describe briefly where you are at the moment and I will suggest what would serve you.
What actually happens over a retreat day
The day has a rhythm and not a timetable.
Morning
Mornings usually begin gently with movement or meditation in the cool.
The middle of the day
The therapeutic work sits in the middle of the day and takes the form of guided sessions, journaling, reflective conversation or expressive exercises depending on the retreat.
Afternoon and evening
Afternoons stay deliberately open.
Meals come from our chef and are eaten together, which for people used to eating alone or at a desk turns out to be a larger part of the experience than expected. There are walks, a hot tub, and shade to sit in with nothing to do.
The night sky is the detail that most apartment dwellers mention afterwards. It is not something Rosebank offers, and the first evening on the farm tends to make that point without anyone having to say it.
Book your introductory call and we will go through the practicalities.
Why the therapeutic structure matters
A weekend somewhere quiet will lower your heart rate. It will not necessarily change anything, and within a few weeks most people are exactly where they started. What makes the difference is pairing the rest with an honest look at what produced the exhaustion.
I am a therapist, systemic coach and couples counsellor. My approach is rooted in systemic therapy, which examines how you interact with your environment and the people in your life, and which works with your strengths and resources rather than listing your deficits. You leave with language for what has been happening and a small number of tools that work in ordinary conditions.
To be explicit about the limits: these retreats are therapeutically grounded but they do not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment. For acute concerns the SADAG helpline is free on 0800 567 567. If you are unsure whether a retreat is right for you now, ask before booking.
Ask me whether a retreat is the right tool for your situation and you will get an honest answer.
Follow-up sessions a short drive away in Sandton
Sandton is minutes from Rosebank and Illovo, and I see clients there face to face by appointment. Menlyn Maine in Pretoria is the alternative, and virtual sessions are available throughout for weeks when getting anywhere is unrealistic.
Many guests book a single integration session two or three weeks after the retreat to consolidate what shifted. Others continue with individual counselling, couples counselling or coaching. Neither is expected, and nothing is offered to you while you are still on the farm.
German speaking guests can work in German for the whole process, from planning through the retreat to follow-up sessions. That is unusual in South Africa and is often what brings people here in the first place.
Book an appointment in Sandton or a virtual session and we will pick up where the retreat left off.
About Juliane
I am a therapist, systemic coach and couples counsellor, registered as a counsellor in independent practice in South Africa, with a Master of Science in psychology and a master’s degree in management. Before moving into therapeutic work I was a consultant and led teams in several companies.
I host all retreats myself and collaborate with co-facilitators for particular formats such as yoga, expressive art and body reset. The environment I try to create is warm, patient and safe, with no expectation that you arrive already knowing what is wrong.
Reach me on +27 67 161 4603, also on WhatsApp, or at juliane@reflectwithjuliane.com. The first fifteen minute call is free and without obligation.
Get in touch and we will work out what kind of pause would actually help.
Frequently asked questions about retreats near Rosebank and Illovo
How long is the drive from Rosebank?
About an hour, via the M1 and N1 north and then the N4 east towards the Cullinan turnoff. Illovo adds only a few minutes either way.
Can I get there without my own car?
Most guests without a car use a lift or a car service. Group retreats often draw several people from the same part of Johannesburg, so let me know when booking and I can mention it.
Is a single day worth it?
For many people yes, particularly as a first experience. An hour each way leaves a full day on the farm, and the day retreat programme is designed to work within that.
What is included?
All guided sessions, meals prepared by our chef, use of the farm including walking routes and the hot tub, and accommodation for overnight formats. Exact inclusions appear in your quotation.
Do I need experience with meditation or yoga?
No. Every practice is guided so complete beginners can take part. Nothing depends on fitness, flexibility or a spiritual background.
What does a retreat cost?
It depends on the format, the length and the group size. Tell me what interests you and you will get a transparent quotation with no hidden extras.
Can I attend alone?
Yes, and many guests do. You can join a small group retreat or book an individual retreat where the focus rests entirely on you.
Are the retreats offered in German?
Yes. I work in German and English, and the whole process can run in German including planning and any follow-up sessions.
Is this a substitute for seeing a psychologist?
No. The retreats are therapeutically grounded but do not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment. For acute concerns SADAG is free on 0800 567 567.
Where can I see you afterwards?
In Sandton by appointment, which is a short drive from Rosebank and Illovo, or in Menlyn Maine in Pretoria, or online.
