Taking the Remote Back: Reclaiming Your Personal Power

As a systemic coach, I often work with clients who feel trapped, controlled, or disempowered by the circumstances and people in their lives. They describe situations where they feel like a passive observer, reacting to the actions of others rather than being the active agent in their own lives.

This dynamic is what I call “being stuck in the perfection trap” – a tendency to hand over our personal power to external factors, believing that we have no choice or control. But the truth is, we always have the capacity to respond consciously, even in the face of challenging situations.

That’s where the practice of “Taking the Remote Back” comes in. It’s a structured reflection exercise designed to help you shift from a reactive state to one of conscious response. Let me walk you through the key steps:

Step 1: Let It Out (Unfiltered Expression)

Start by bringing to mind a recent situation that felt activating or emotionally charged for you. Describe it in an unfiltered way, without editing or analyzing. This allows you to get the raw experience out on the table.

Step 2: Shift into the First Person

Now revisit the same situation, but this time, consciously shift your language to the first person. Instead of saying “They did this to me,” try phrasing it as “I experienced this, and I felt/thought/responded in this way.” This subtle shift in perspective is powerful.

Step 3: Explore Your Inner Experience

Deepen your awareness by tuning into the different layers of your internal experience – the physical sensations, emotions, thought patterns, and behavioral impulses that arose for you in that moment. Observe these with curiosity, without judgment.

Step 4: Meaning-Making

Reflect on the meaning and story you created about what happened. What assumptions or interpretations did you make? Then, gently question whether this is the only possible way to view the situation. What other perspectives might also be true?

Step 5: Taking the Remote Back

Finally, shift into a space of conscious choice. Recognize that you are not passive in this experience – you are an active participant. What options do you have in how you respond, moving forward? What would a response aligned with your deepest values look like?

The key thing to remember is that “Taking the Remote Back” isn’t about blaming or shaming yourself. It’s about reclaiming your innate capacity for agency and self-direction, even in the face of challenging circumstances.

By practicing this process, you’ll start to notice a shift in how you relate to the events and people in your life. You’ll become more grounded in your own experience, more discerning in your interpretations, and more empowered in your choices. It’s a powerful path to reclaiming your personal power.

I encourage you to give it a try, and let me know how it goes. I’m here to support you on your journey of self-discovery and growth.
