The East Rand

A quieter route than most of Gauteng has

Bedfordview, Edenvale, Bruma and the surrounding suburbs sit on the eastern edge of Johannesburg, which turns out to be a considerable advantage when you want to leave. The R21 runs north towards Pretoria and connects onto the N4 east, and the whole journey to the farm near Cullinan generally takes under an hour without touching the M1 or the western side of the city.

Drive time

The route

R21 north → N4 east → Cullinan turnoff.

What you skip

The M1 and the western side of the city, entirely.

That geography changes the calculation. A day retreat is straightforward, a Friday afternoon departure is not a negotiation with traffic, and a Sunday return does not eat the evening. For a part of Johannesburg that often feels overlooked in favour of the northern suburbs, this is one thing the East Rand simply does better.

The route also runs past the airport, which matters for a particular group of guests: people arriving in South Africa, people leaving, and people combining a retreat with the beginning or the end of a longer trip.

The airport

Close to O. R. Tambo, which opens up a different kind of stay

O. R. Tambo International is roughly fifteen minutes from Bedfordview and Edenvale, and the farm is a further forty five minutes or so north east. For international guests that combination is unusually convenient: you land, you drive, and you are somewhere quiet the same afternoon.

A number of guests use a retreat as the opening or the closing chapter of a South African trip. As an opening it settles the nervous system before the travelling starts. As a closing it gives the trip somewhere to land, which is often more valuable, since most people return home from a holiday more tired than they left.

German speaking visitors can have the entire experience in German, from the planning conversation through the retreat to any follow-up. In South Africa that is a rare offer, and for people who have travelled a long way it removes one more layer of effort.

If you are travelling to South Africa, get in touch early and we will fit a retreat into your itinerary.

Retreat types

The retreat types on offer

The theme shapes the work more than the length does. All of the following are available as day, weekend or longer formats:

For exhaustion, prolonged stress and emotional processing.

For stress that has settled into the body.

Structured around reconnecting, understanding and practical commitments.

Using creativity therapeutically with no artistic experience needed.

For when the noise itself is the obstacle.

Combining breath, movement and stillness.

For households navigating tension or transition.

Shorter seasonal formats.

A short questionnaire helps identify which format matches your intentions. Ask me for it.

On the farm

What the days involve

01

Morning

Mornings usually begin with gentle movement or a short meditation while it is still cool.

02

The middle of the day

The reflective and therapeutic work sits around the middle of the day, taking the form of guided sessions, journaling, conversation or expressive exercises depending on the retreat.

03

Afternoon and evening

Afternoons are left open deliberately, for walking, resting, the hot tub or nothing at all.

Our chef prepares the meals and they are eaten together. The farm sits in open country outside Cullinan with no through traffic, and the bird life and the night skies are the two things guests mention most consistently afterwards.

Bring comfortable clothes and a willingness to slow down. Nothing on the programme requires prior experience of yoga, meditation or therapy, and nothing depends on fitness. Everything else is settled in the introductory call so you arrive with no open questions.

Book a call and we will go through the shape of your retreat days.

The difference

Rest paired with reflection, not a lodge stay

There are lovely places to sleep within an hour of the East Rand. What a therapeutic retreat adds is structure: the rest is combined with guided work, so that you understand what depleted you rather than only noticing that you were depleted.

I work from systemic therapy, which looks at how you interact with your environment and the people in your life, and which focuses on strengths and resources rather than deficits. The practical result is that you leave with language for what has been happening and a small number of tools that survive contact with an ordinary week.

A clear boundary: the retreats are therapeutically grounded but they do not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment. For acute concerns the SADAG helpline is free on 0800 567 567. If you are uncertain whether a retreat suits your situation, tell me before booking and we will assess it honestly.

Ask me directly whether a retreat fits your circumstances and you will get a straight answer.

Afterwards

Sessions before and after

Face to face appointments are available in Sandton and in Menlyn Maine in Pretoria by arrangement, and virtual sessions are available throughout. From Bedfordview and Edenvale, Sandton is usually the more convenient of the two, though many guests simply work online.

A single integration session two or three weeks after the retreat is common and often enough. Others continue with regular counselling, couples counselling or coaching. Neither is expected, and no continuation is proposed to you while you are on the farm.

International guests frequently continue virtually after returning home, which works well and keeps whatever opened up during the retreat from closing again on the flight.

Book a session in Sandton or online, whichever is easier from where you are.
