Retreats near Sandton: a therapeutic escape one hour from the office

You work late, sleep badly, and by Sunday evening the next week has already begun. My therapeutic retreats take place on a quiet farm near Cullinan, roughly an hour from Sandton. No flights, no long-haul travel, just a short drive out of the city into rest, reflection and open sky, guided in English or German.

The pressure

Why so many people from Sandton arrive already depleted

Sandton concentrates a very particular kind of pressure. Head offices, law firms, banks and consultancies sit within a few blocks of each other, and the working rhythm around Rivonia Road, Maude Street and Alice Lane rarely leaves room for a genuine pause. Add the commute, the evening calls with other time zones and the expectation of constant availability, and the result is a nervous system that never fully switches off.

Most of my guests from Sandton do not arrive in crisis. They arrive functioning. They still deliver, still show up, still meet deadlines, but they no longer recover on weekends and no longer feel much of anything at the end of the day. That state has a name in the clinical literature and a very simple practical consequence: rest alone does not resolve it. What helps is rest combined with understanding what caused the depletion in the first place.

Leave is often part of the problem rather than the solution. Two weeks in Cape Town or the Kruger involve packing, driving, planning and photographing. They can be wonderful, but they are not the same as a structured pause in which someone else holds the schedule and you are asked, gently and repeatedly, how you are actually doing.

If you recognise this pattern, book a free fifteen minute introductory call and we will look at whether a retreat fits your situation.

Rest alone does not resolve it. What helps is rest combined with understanding what caused the depletion in the first place.

Getting there

How to reach the farm from Sandton

The farm lies near Cullinan in eastern Gauteng, the historic diamond town about forty kilometres east of Pretoria. From Sandton the usual route runs north on the N1 towards Pretoria, then east on the N4 in the direction of Witbank, before turning off towards Cullinan on the R513. Depending on the hour you leave, the drive takes roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter.

Drive time

An hour to an hour and a quarter, depending on the hour you leave.

The route

N1 north → N4 east → R513 towards Cullinan.

Best departure

Around fourteen hundred, or after nineteen hundred, to miss the N1 crawl.

That matters more than it sounds. It means a Friday afternoon departure after the last meeting still gets you to the farm before dark, and it means a single day retreat is realistic without losing half the day to travel. Guests who want to avoid the N1 northbound crawl often leave Sandton at around fourteen hundred or wait until after nineteen hundred, both of which make the trip noticeably shorter.

Once you turn off the highway the landscape changes quickly. The traffic thins, the horizon opens, and the last stretch runs past smallholdings and bushveld. Several guests have told me the transition begins in the car, well before they arrive.

Tell me which weekend you have in mind and I will send you the exact route and arrival details.

Formats

Retreat formats that fit a demanding work schedule

Not everyone can disappear for a week, so the programme is built in layers. You choose the depth that your calendar and your situation allow.

01

A single day on the farm, useful as a first experience or as a regular reset between projects.

02

Two to three days, the format most Sandton guests choose, long enough for the body to settle and the mind to quieten.

03

Up to a week, for people working through a significant change such as a separation, a bereavement or a career transition.

04

An intensive, individually designed programme for deeper processes.

05

Planned around you alone, as a couple, with family or with a small group of friends.

Details of each format are available on the retreat overview page. If you are unsure which one suits you, a short questionnaire helps narrow it down before we speak.

Have a look at the retreat overview and tell me which format sounds closest to what you need.

On the farm

What a day on the farm actually looks like

There is a rhythm, but there is no drill.

01

Morning

Mornings usually begin gently, often with movement or a short meditation while it is still cool.

02

The middle of the day

The middle of the day is where the therapeutic work sits: reflective sessions, journaling, guided conversation or expressive exercises, depending on the retreat.

Meals are prepared by our chef and eaten together, which turns out to matter. Sitting down to food you did not order, plan or rush through is its own small intervention.

03

Afternoon and evening

Afternoons are deliberately open for walking, resting, the hot tub or simply doing nothing, which for many guests is the hardest part.

Evenings tend to end outside. The bird life around the farm is remarkable, and the night sky is a genuine shock for anyone who has only ever seen it through Johannesburg light pollution.

You bring comfortable clothes, curiosity and a willingness to slow down. No prior experience of meditation, yoga or therapy is required, and no particular level of fitness. Everything else we discuss in the introductory call so that you arrive without questions hanging over you.

Book your introductory call and we will map out what your days on the farm would look like.

The difference

How this differs from a spa weekend or a bush lodge

Gauteng has no shortage of beautiful places to sleep. What distinguishes a therapeutic retreat is that the rest is paired with structured inner work. I am a therapist, systemic coach and couples counsellor, and every retreat is designed so that you not only recover but also understand what drained you and what you can change when you go back.

My approach is rooted in systemic therapy, which looks at how you interact with your environment and the people around you. We work with your strengths and resources rather than only your difficulties. The practical consequence is that you leave with something more durable than a good night of sleep: language for what has been happening and a small set of tools you can actually use in a Monday meeting.

One honest note. My retreats are therapeutically grounded but they do not replace psychotherapy or medical treatment. If you are in acute distress, the free SADAG helpline on 0800 567 567 is available around the clock. If you are unsure whether a retreat is right for your situation, say so before you book and we will assess it together, without obligation.

Not sure whether you need a retreat or therapy? Ask me directly and you will get an honest answer.

Choosing

Which retreat suits which situation

For exhaustion, prolonged stress and periods when you no longer recognise your own reactions.

When stress has become physical, through tension, poor sleep or digestive complaints.

For partners who function well as a household but have stopped meeting as people.

For those who already know what the problem is and simply need the noise to stop.

When talking has reached its limit and something else needs to come out.

A gentler entry point, focused on breath, movement and stillness.

For families navigating tension, transition or the aftermath of a difficult year.

For people standing at a genuine turning point.

Send me a short message describing where you are at the moment and I will suggest the format that fits.

Afterwards

Continuing the work afterwards, with sessions in Sandton

A retreat is a beginning rather than a conclusion, and for guests based in Sandton the follow-up is straightforward. I see clients face to face in Sandton by appointment, so a session after work involves crossing a few blocks rather than crossing the province. Appointments in Menlyn Maine in Pretoria are also possible, and everything can be done virtually if your diary is unpredictable.

Some guests book a single integration session two or three weeks after the farm, to consolidate what shifted. Others move into regular individual counselling, couples counselling or coaching. There is no expectation either way, and no package you are steered into during the retreat itself.

For German speakers this combination is unusual in South Africa. The entire process, from planning through the retreat to follow-up sessions, can run in German if that is where you think and feel most clearly.

Book an appointment in Sandton or a virtual session and we will pick up where the retreat left off.

Who guides you

About Juliane

I am a therapist, systemic coach and couples counsellor, registered as a counsellor in independent practice in South Africa. I hold a Master of Science in psychology and a master’s degree in management. Before I moved into therapeutic work I spent years as a consultant and led teams in several companies, which is why the exhaustion described by people in Sandton offices is familiar to me from the inside as well as from the consulting room.

I host all retreats myself and work with co-facilitators for specific formats such as yoga, expressive art and body reset. My aim is a warm, patient and safe environment in which healing and self-reflection are possible without performance pressure.

Reach me on +27 67 161 4603, also on WhatsApp, or by email at juliane@reflectwithjuliane.com. The first fifteen minute call is free and entirely without obligation.
