Reflect with Juliane – M. Sc. Psychology and Systemic Counsellor
Burnout isn’t personal failure – it’s the result of a society that pushes us toward constant self-optimization. As a therapist, I see daily how people exhaust themselves believing their worth depends on endless achievement. The truth is: you are already valuable simply because you exist. It’s time to step off the performance hamster wheel and recognize that true well-being isn’t reached through the next goal, but through self-acceptance and conscious boundary-setting.
We live in a society that has sold us a dangerous lie: that happiness, fulfillment, and self-worth can be achieved through endless accomplishment. As a therapist, I’ve never met someone who said, “Since I reached this goal, I feel accomplished and happy every day.” Yet we continue chasing this false promise, believing that the next promotion, achievement, or milestone will finally make us feel complete.
The truth is, we are a burned-out generation – not because we’re weak or failing individually, but because we’re living within a system that has fundamentally shifted how pressure operates. Drawing from Byung-Chul Han’s “The Burnout Society,” our culture has moved from external control (“you must”) to self-optimization (“you can”). While this sounds liberating, it has created an even more insidious form of pressure: we now push ourselves to the limit, believing that everything is possible and that failure is entirely personal.
